My Bearded Dragons

How I ended up with a collection of bearded dragons!

It started with one, that’s the way addiction works.

Murphy

I had no intentions of having three bearded dragons, but this is how it happened. One day in March of 2018 we took over the care of our first bearded dragon, Murphy. He was scaly and very big. At first it was kind of intimidating at first, but I had already done a lot of reading, studying and knew a lot about the way things needed to be to have a healthy dragon. Oh, it’s quite extensive. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

As our family was falling for this sweet, and chilled out dragon, I was running around trying to make sure I had the lighting right, that the heat temps were correct, making sure I had the correct type of laser to measure the temperatures, and trying to get him to eat. It’s kind of hard to have reference to how much they should be eating when you have never had a dragon before. It turns out that Murphy just doesn’t eat all that much, but also his phosphorous was a bit low and that was making him quite tired.

It wasn’t too long and my son and I were constantly wanting to hold him, watch TV with him laying on our shoulder or chests, and dragons really need to be in their terrariums to soak up UVB, so we were having to time it out so he got the right amount of basking time and we both had time to cuddle with him, this prompted the need for a second dragon.

Stella joined our family in that same year in the month of August.

Stella

I was so excited to meet and pick up Stella. I had seen many pictures of her and she was coming from a very good home. The original owner understood bearded dragons and had taken very good care of her. She just didn’t have the time she needed to give Stella due to college, and 2 part time jobs. Let me tell you though, Stella requires a lot more attention not to mention food. She loves to eat, and she loves for you to come see her, pet her, hold her. It’s like “me, me, me”. She gets lots of loving and cuddles. I call her my little monkey even though she is a lizard. She loves to climb and run around her jungle themed terrarium.

Less than 1 month later which was just about the time I had Stella’s terrarium all set up with the proper lighting, and UVB etc my husband announces that we are getting a Bearded Dragon named Karen.

Karen

Karen’s owner also didn’t have time for her either, but not because she was busy with work and college. She had just put her mother on Hospice but in another state so she was traveling a lot. A 3rd bearded dragon wasn’t something I was really ready for, but knew I still had plenty of time and love to give her. My son also really likes Karen because she is much more like Murphy his dragon. They are both Regular Bearded Dragons, unlike Stella, she is a Hypo Leatherback.

Karen is more skittish than the others, but she is very sweet, strong and fast too. I was starting to run out of themes for all these terrariums, but I decided to go with a beach/tropical theme for Karen, and she seems to enjoy it. It’s been a little over a month since I picked up Karen now. Karen is starting to settle in and become more accustomed to being held often.
